China Box Office Sees Once Upon a Time in the Middle East Maintain Top Position as V Opens Strong in Second Place

The Chinese box office witnessed continued dominance from the war comedy-drama Once Upon a Time in the Middle East during the August 21 to 23 weekend, as the film secured $43.9 million in ticket sales to maintain its number one position. The production, which has resonated strongly with mainland aunces, demonstrates the enduring appeal of culturally relevant storytelling that blends humor with dramatic wartime narratives.

Directed by Wen Muye, whose previous work Dying to Survive achieved critical acclaim, the film features an ensemble cast including Shen Teng, Jiang Qiming, Aarif Rahman, and Omar Sherif. Since its nationwide launch on August 11, Once Upon a Time in the Middle East has accumulated an impressive $232.2 million at the box office, cementing its status as one of the summer’s most successful releases.

The narrative follows a Chinese chef who relocates to the Middle East in an effort to settle family debts by operating a restaurant. The story takes a dramatic turn when regional armed conflict transforms his elishment into a community refuge, offering aunces both entertainment and emotional depth through its exploration of humanity during wartime.

As the film continues its theatrical run, industry observers will be watching closely to see whether it can sustain momentum through the coming weeks and potentially join the ranks of China’s highest grossing films of the year.
