Hong Kong Tiananmen Vigil Organizers Convicted as Tesla Recalls Millions of Vehicles in China

Hong Kong’s decades-long tradition of publicly commemorating the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown has been effectively extinguished after two prominent organizers were convicted Friday of inciting subversion under China’s sweeping national security law. Lee Cheuk-yan and Chow -tung, former leaders of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, now face up to 10 years in prison after government-approved judges ruled their calls to “end one-party dictatorship” constituted attempts to overthrow Communist Party leadership.

The convictions mark another significant blow to Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement, which has been systematically dismantled since Beijing imposed the national security law in 2020. Tang Ngok-kwan, a 58-year-old former vigil organizer who remains free, continues to privately remember the crackdown at Victoria Park, where tens of thousands once gathered annually for what was China’s only large-scale public commemoration of the event.

Meanwhile, Tesla is recalling approximately 2.98 million vehicles in China over door handle safety risks, representing the country’s largest automotive recall this year. The action affects multiple models including the Model 3, Model Y, Model X and Model S, and comes months before Chinese authorities implement new regulations banning hidden door handles commonly featured on electric vehicles.

These developments underscore the evolving political and regulatory landscape across Asia, where both civil liberties and consumer safety standards face heightened scrutiny from government authorities.
