Nigerian Cleric Urges Voters to Prioritize Security Over Religion in 2027 Elections Following Mosque Abductions

A prominent Nigerian Islamic scholar has called on citizens to make insecurity the defining issue of the 2027 general elections, moving away from religious considerations that have traditionally dominated political campaigns. Sheikh Nuruddeen Khalid, widely known as the Digital Imam, made the appeal following the abduction of more than 60 worshippers during Friday prayers in Dekara, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

In a video statement addressing the incident, Khalid expressed deep concern over the relentless cycle of violence and kidnappings plaguing communities across Nigeria. He questioned how many more lives would be lost before decisive action is taken by both citizens and leaders. The cleric criticized what he described as selective outrage based on the religious identity of victims, noting that public reactions often depend on whether Muslims are ed in the South or Christians in the North.

Khalid emphasized that voters should focus on candidates’ ability to protect lives and property rather than their religious affiliations or political party memberships. He stated that anyone who cannot demonstrate a credible plan to end the security crisis should be rejected at the polls, regardless of their religious credentials or ticket composition. The cleric stressed that accountability should be the primary criterion for selecting leaders in the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, security forces continue efforts to address the deteriorating situation. The Nigerian Air Force has intensified operations against terrorism and banditry across the North West region, strengthening its air presence in Sokoto State to enhance aerial surveillance and support ground forces. These developments underscore the urgency of the security challenges that Khalid argues should dominate the 2027 electoral conversation.
