St James’ Park will become a theater of emotion on Sunday afternoon as Newcastle United and Liverpool come together to honor the late Kevin Keegan ahead of their Premier League season opener. The football legend, who passed away on July 20 at age 75 following a battle with stage four stomach cancer, remains deeply revered at both clubs where he left an indelible mark on English football history. Both fanbases have united in grief and celebration, preparing fitting tributes for a man who made 323 appearances for Liverpool between 1971 and 1977 before becoming an icon on Tyneside as both player and manager.

Keegan’s family revealed his cancer diagnosis in January, and speaking at a Newcastle event in May, he expressed his desire to return to St James’ Park one final time. His poignant words still resonate with supporters who will now fulfill that wish through their tributes. Newcastle officials have confirmed close collaboration with Liverpool, supporter groups including the Fan Advisory Board, Newcastle United Supporters Trust, Wor Flags, and the Premier League to ensure the commemoration reflects Keegan’s extraordinary legacy.

The match itself features new managers in both dugouts, with Matthias Jaissle taking charge of Newcastle following Ed Howe’s shock departure, while Andoni Iraola succeeds Arne Slot at Liverpool. Newcastle have endured a difficult summer, losing key players Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, while Liverpool continue working to replace Mohamed Salah.

Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30pm BST, with Sky Sports broadcasting what promises to be an afternoon where football takes a backseat to remembrance and celebration of one of the game’s true greats.
