ADC Declares 2027 Election Will Be Referendum on Tinubu’s Economic Performance

The African Democratic Congress has fired a salvo at President Bola Tinubu’s administration, declaring that no amount of campaign infrastructure can erase the economic hardship Nigerians have endured during his tenure. The opposition party characterized the upcoming 2027 general election as a decisive referendum on the president’s first term performance, suggesting voters will prioritize lived experience over political messaging.

National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi raised pointed questions about the composition of Tinubu’s emerging campaign council, particularly the inclusion of former officials facing corruption allegations. The party specifically highlighted former Humanitarian Affairs Minister Betta Edu and former NSITF Chairman Ngozi Olejeme, demanding transparency about how any charges against them were resolved. The opposition described the campaign team as resembling a rehabilitation centre for politically connected individuals with unresolved accountability questions.

The party accused the administration of allowing corruption investigations to quietly disappear whenever individuals become politically useful again, suggesting that allegations appear to have expiry dates tied to political convenience. According to the ADC, Nigerians have been asked to tighten their belts and endure austerity while government connected individuals continue enjoying what it termed obscene opulence.

Looking ahead, the ADC reiterated support for targeted fuel subsis as proposed by presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, emphasizing that such interventions must be budgeted, capped, and independently audited. The party challenged the government to account for its own expenditures before claiming Nigeria cannot afford measures to ease the cost of living crisis affecting millions of citizens.
