Atiku Urges FBI to Release Tinubu Records as Nigerians Face Economic Hardship

Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has challenged the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation to release publicly available records concerning President Bola Tinubu while protecting sensitive investigative ods and sources. The appeal comes as the FBI seeks court permission to file confidential explanations for withholding certain documents related to investigations involving the Nigerian president.

In a statement issued through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku acknowledged the need to protect FBI agents and confidential sources but cautioned against using such protections to shield Tinubu from legitimate public scrutiny. The FBI had approached a US District Court in the District of Columbia on August 20, requesting to submit declarations privately, arguing that public disclosure could expose sensitive information and potentially endanger lives.

Atiku rejected this reasoning, drawing attention to the economic hardship facing ordinary Nigerians under the current administration. He emphasized that citizens are already suffering from policies including the removal of fuel subsis, which has driven up transportation costs, food prices and unemployment. The former vice president questioned whose lives the FBI was protecting when Nigerians were already experiencing severe economic distress.

The controversy highlights the ongoing political tensions in Nigeria and raises questions about transparency and accountability at the highest levels of government. As the legal proceedings continue in US courts, Nigerians await clarity on what information, if any, will be made public regarding their president’s past investigations.
