Presidential hopeful Peter Obi has outlined an ambitious regional development strategy for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, promising a campaign centered on competence rather than ethnic or religious divisions. Speaking at a press conference in Onitsha, Anambra State, the Nigeria Democratic Congress candidate presented detailed plans for economic transformation across the country’s six geopolitical zones.

Obi painted a stark picture of Nigeria’s current challenges, citing International Monetary Fund data showing that over 140 million Nigerians live below the poverty line while 35 million face food insecurity. With 3.6 million internally displaced persons and millions of young people struggling to find employment, the candidate emphasized that these statistics represent real hardships affecting Nigerian families daily.

His zone-specific proposals include expanding agriculture and agro-processing in the North-West, accelerating reconstruction efforts in the North-East, and strengthening the South-West’s technology and finance sectors. The South-East would benefit from enhanced infrastructure and investment access, while the South-South would diversify beyond oil and gas into maritime services and agriculture.

The candidate urged Nigerians to scrutinize all presidential aspirants based on their records and evidence-based proposals rather than divisive rhetoric, expressing confidence that Nigeria can overcome its existential challenges through competent leadership and national unity.
