Arsenal Face Squad Squeeze as Arteta Eyes Four Exits Before Transfer Deadline

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta finds himself in the unusual position of having too much talent at his disposal, a luxury problem that has nonetheless become a genuine headache as the summer transfer window enters its final fortnight. Following the Gunners’ commanding 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City on Sunday, Arteta publicly expressed his frustration with Premier League squad size regulations, revealing that several capable players were left out entirely due to registration constraints rather than footballing reasons.

Four fringe players who failed to make the matchday squad in Cardiff are now firmly in the shop window as sporting director Andrea Berta works to facilitate departures before the September 1 deadline. Fabio Vieira and Reiss Nelson, both of whom spent last season away on loan, are attracting concrete interest from Hamburg and West Ham respectively. Meanwhile, Gabriel Jesus, entering the final 12 months of his contract, has caught the attention of Napoli, who view the former Manchester City forward as an ideal addition to their ing options. Perhaps most intriguingly, 19-year-old academy product Ethan Nwaneri could be sacrificed despite his considerable promise, with Galatasaray among several clubs making formal enquiries about the midfielder.

Nwaneri’s potential departure highlights the ruthless financial realities facing even the most successful clubs. Having spent last season gaining valuable experience on loan with Marseille and AC Milan, the teenager faces an uphill battle for minutes in Arsenal’s talent-rich midfield, particularly with new signing Bruno Guimaraes now competing for a starting berth. As a homegrown player, any transfer fee received for Nwaneri would count as pure profit on the balance sheet under Premier League accounting rules, making him an attractive asset to sell from a financial sustainability perspective, regardless of his long-term potential.

Arteta made no attempt to hide his displeasure with the current squad registration system when speaking to TNT Sports after lifting the Community Shield. Referencing both Nwaneri and 16-year-old defender Marli Salmon, who traveled to Cardiff but was also excluded from the matchday squad, the Spanish manager called for rule ces to accommodate more players. He has been lobbying the Premier League directly to expand squad sizes, arguing that talented professionals deserve the opportunity to contribute rather than watching from the stands due to administrative limitations.

Gabriel Martinelli’s future remains uncertain despite Galatasaray tabling a substantial offer worth approximately £38 million for the Brazilian forward. Sources close to the player suggest he harbors reservations about relocating to Turkey, preferring to remain in north London or explore options in Europe’s other top leagues. With Martinelli entering the final year of his contract, Arsenal face a familiar dilemma: cash in now while his value remains high or risk losing him for nothing next summer. Unless a more appealing proposal emerges from elsewhere, the 23-year-old appears likely to stay put for at least another season.

Arsenal’s pressing need to balance the books extends beyond simply creating squad space. Revenue from player sales would provide crucial funding for two remaining priorities: securing a central defender to provide cover for the injured William Saliba and acquiring a world-class er to bolster their Premier League title challenge. Berta has already overseen the departures of Leandro Trossard to Besiktas, Jakub Kiwior to Porto, Karl Hein to Werder Bremen and Christian Norgaard to Everton, but further sales are required to complete Arteta’s summer business. With less than two weeks remaining before the transfer window slams shut, the clock is ticking on Arsenal’s efforts to streamline their squad while maintaining the depth necessary to compete on multiple fronts throughout the demanding campaign ahead.
