Jemima Osunde Refuses to Yield for Traffic Violators in Lagos Standoff

Nollywood actress Jemima Osunde has ignited a conversation about lawlessness on Nigerian roads after refusing to yield her lane to a driver who allegedly violated traffic regulations in Lagos. In a video shared online, the actress detailed a tense standoff with a motorist who attempted to drive against traffic to avoid congestion, a practice commonly known as driving “one way” that has become increasingly prevalent in the bustling metropolis.

According to Osunde, the incident occurred when a driver left his designated lane to circumvent heavy traffic and entered the opposite lane meant for vehicles traveling towards Lekki, one of Lagos’s major commercial and residential districts. Rather than move aside as many motorists typically do when confronted with such violations, the actress held her ground and blocked the vehicle from passing. Her defiant stance comes amid growing frustration among Lagos residents over the apparent disregard for traffic laws that contributes to the city’s notorious congestion problems.

Speaking directly to her followers, Osunde made her position unequivocally clear. She stated that she would not leave her lane for anyone driving illegally, regardless of whether they had police escorts or claimed urgent business. Her message resonated with many Nigerians who have long complained about the culture of impunity that allows well connected individuals to flout traffic regulations with apparent immunity. The actress emphasized that she was prepared to delay her own plans and remain stuck in traffic rather than enable such violations.

Osunde’s frustration extends beyond this single incident to what she perceives as a broader pattern of lawless behavior. She expressed exhaustion with Nigerians “just doing anyhow” and noted that such disregard for traffic rules only exacerbates Lagos’s already severe congestion issues. The actress also criticized drivers who run red lights and engage in other dangerous practices that put lives at risk. Her comments reflect a sentiment shared by many residents who feel that enforcement of traffic laws in Nigeria’s commercial capital remains woefully inadequate.

However, the actress did outline exceptions to her hardline stance. Osunde clarified that she would willingly yield to emergency service vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks, recognizing the critical nature of their missions. This distinction underscores her argument that her protest targets not legitimate urgent needs but rather the casual disregard for rules that has become normalized among ordinary motorists and those who believe their status entitles them to special treatment on public roads.

Osunde’s public stand arrives at a moment when Lagos authorities are grappling with how to manage traffic flow in a megacity of over 20 million people. Whether her individual act of resistance will inspire others to hold the line against traffic violators or simply lead to more confrontations on already tense roads remains to be seen. What is certain is that her viral video has thrust the conversation about road discipline and civic responsibility back into the spotlight, forcing Lagosians to confront an uncomfortable question about whether collective tolerance of small violations perpetuates the larger chaos that defines their daily commute.
