Rosie O’Donnell Hints at Possible Return to The View After More Than a Decade

Rosie O’Donnell is leaving the door open for a comeback to the daytime television stage that made her a household name. The 64 year old comedian revealed on a recent podcast appearance that she would consider returning to The View for its upcoming 30th anniversary season, more than a decade after her tumultuous departure from the ABC talk show. Speaking candidly on the Tangle With Kyle Ridley podcast on August 3, O’Donnell suggested that producers may invite former hosts back to celebrate the milestone, and she would participate in whatever capacity they desired.

O’Donnell’s history with The View reads like a dramatic screenplay with multiple acts. She first joined the show in 2006, replacing original moderator Meredith Vieira during a period when daytime talk was dominated by lighter fare and celebrity gossip. Her tenure was marked by increasingly heated political debates, culminating in an explosive on air confrontation with conservative cohost Elisabeth Hasselbeck that effectively ended her run after just one season. When contract renewal negotiations reportedly collapsed, the network brought in Whoopi Goldberg to assume the moderator role and restore ility to the increasingly controversial program.

Years later, O’Donnell attempted a second stint on The View in 2014, sharing the table once again with Goldberg. That reunion proved equally challenging, with tensions between the two Emmy winners reportedly affecting the show’s chemistry. O’Donnell departed after only five months, publicly citing heart issues as the reason for her abrupt exit. Behind the scenes, however, reports suggested that her working relationship with Goldberg had become untenable, with creative differences and personality clashes creating an uncomfortable atmosphere for both hosts and production staff.

In her recent podcast appearance, O’Donnell reflected on those difficult years with a mixture of candor and regret. She compared her vision for the show to a championship basketball team, hoping she and Goldberg would complement each other like Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan. Instead, she believes Goldberg may have felt encroached upon by her strong personality and distinctive hosting style. O’Donnell maintained that she never intended to overshadow her cohost but simply approached the job with the same energy and conviction that defined her successful solo talk show in the 1990s. Both women have since reconciled, with O’Donnell describing their current relationship as friendly and respectful.

O’Donnell’s potential return comes at an interesting moment in her personal and professional life. Currently residing in Ireland after relocating during President Donald Trump’s second term, she has repeatedly stated her dissatisfaction with the American political climate. Despite speculation about various television opportunities, including late night hosting positions after her guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, O’Donnell has clarified that she remains focused on daytime television formats while her child completes eighth grade abroad. A representative for O’Donnell confirmed that while the 30th season guest appearance idea has been discussed informally, no official invitation has been extended by the show’s producers.

Whether O’Donnell actually returns to The View remains uncertain, but her willingness to revisit that chapter speaks to both personal growth and professional pragmatism. The show has evolved considerably since her controversial departures, becoming a influential platform for political discourse and cultural commentary with a rotating panel that currently includes Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin, and Ana Navarro. A 30th anniversary celebration featuring former hosts could provide closure for one of daytime television’s most complicated relationships while offering viewers a nostalgic look at the personalities who shaped the program’s evolution. For O’Donnell, it represents an opportunity to acknowledge her role in transforming The View from entertainment focused programming into the politically charged forum it has become today.
