A fierce political row has erupted over the handling of the recent school abduction in Oyo State, with Senator Adams Oshiomhole launching a scathing on Governor Seyi Makinde for inviting international scrutiny of the incident. The lawmaker representing Edo North Senatorial District used the floor of the Senate on Tuesday to condemn the governor’s call for United Nations intervention, describing it as an affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty and an attempt to weaponize a national security crisis for political gain.
Governor Makinde had made the controversial request during a statewide broadcast on Monday, moments after the Nigerian military formally returned the rescued pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area to state custody. In his address, Makinde argued that the circumstances surrounding both the abduction and the remarkably swift rescue operation raised troubling questions that warranted independent international investigation beyond Nigeria’s domestic institutions.
