Just a few years ago, Halloween costumes sparked outrage over cultural appropriation, nutrition science became entangled with accusations of racial bias, and the names of songbirds faced scrutiny in campaigns against historical injustice. Concepts of punctuality and professional excellence were reframed by some academics as expressions of systemic racism. These episodes, now often dismissed as excesses of a peculiar moment born from pandemic anxiety and the fury surrounding George Floyd’s death, were never merely spontaneous eruptions of moral fervor. Instead, they emerged from decades of philosophical development within academic institutions and activist circles.
Recent political developments suggest the underlying worldview remains potent. Their success points to continued appeal of a framework that views American society through the lens of oppressor versus oppressed, a narrative that has proven remarkably durable even as its more extreme manifestations face pushback.

Whether wokeness evolves, fragments, or genuinely recedes will likely depend on factors beyond the current backlash. Millions in the West have internalized a worldview that elevates the moral claims of marginalized groups while questioning the legitimacy of existing institutions. These ideas, refined through volumes of academic scholarship and supported by nonprofit funding over half a century, are increasingly embedded in law and policy.
