Chelsea demand 40 million pounds for Liam Delap as Newcastle and Everton circle

Chelsea have placed a £40 million price tag on striker Liam Delap, opening the door for potential summer moves to Newcastle United or Everton following a deeply underwhelming debut season at Stamford Bridge. The 23 year old forward, who arrived from Ipswich Town in a £30 million deal last summer amid considerable fanfare, managed just two goals in 41 appearances across all competitions. His struggles have prompted the Blues to consider cashing in on the former Manchester City academy product as new manager Xabi Alonso prepares to reshape his ing options.

Delap’s fall from grace has been swift and stark. After catching the eye with 12 goals for relegated Ipswich during an impressive first season in the Premier League, multiple top flight clubs battled for his signature. Chelsea ultimately won that race, but the striker found himself perpetually in the shadow of fellow summer signing Joao Pedro, who has proven to be one of the few ing successes in what has been a tumultuous campaign for the west London club. While Pedro has attracted interest from Barcelona, Chelsea consider him untouchable, making Delap or the returning Nicolas Jackson more likely candidates for departure.

Newcastle manager Ed Howe has identified the need for additional striking reinforcements following Nick Woltemade’s inconsistent performances at St James’ Park. The Germany international arrived as a replacement for Alexander Isak but faded badly after a promising start, eventually being deployed in midfield as his form deserted him. Delap represents a potential solution to those problems, though whether Newcastle will meet Chelsea’s asking price remains unclear given the striker’s disappointing output over the past 12 months.

Everton maintain a longstanding interest in Delap, having pursued him last summer before he opted for Stamford Bridge. David Moyes is keen to bolster his ing resources, particularly with speculation mounting that Thierno Barry could depart Goodison Park. Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig have made enquiries for Barry, who joined the Toffees in a £27 million deal last summer. Should that sale materialize, Everton would have both the funds and the pressing need to reinvest in forward options.

Former England midfielder Danny Murphy believes incoming Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso will resist selling Delap, arguing that the Spaniard will want to assess all his options before making definitive decisions. Murphy suggested that Delap brings different characteristics to Chelsea’s compared to Pedro, qualities that could prove valuable under new management. He also noted the practical challenges of moving players on substantial wages, pointing out that declaring a player surplus to requirements is far simpler than finding a suitable destination willing to pay appropriate fees.

However, former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend offered a far harsher assessment, claiming Delap looks like a Championship level player based on what he has shown in a Chelsea shirt. Such divergent opinions from respected pundits underscore the uncertainty surrounding Delap’s future and his true quality level. As Alonso begins his tenure at Stamford Bridge, one of his earliest and most consequential decisions will involve determining which strikers fit his vision and which represent valuable assets to be converted into transfer funds for alternative targets. For Delap, the coming weeks will determine whether he gets a fresh opportunity to prove his worth or becomes another cautionary tale of a promising talent who never found his feet at one of English football’s biggest clubs.
