Trump Calls Himself the GOAT, Considers Headlining America’s 250th Birthday Festival After Artist Boycotts

President Donald Trump has announced he is considering replacing withdrawn performers at America’s 250th birthday celebration with what he calls the greatest attraction in the world: himself. In a Truth Social post Saturday, the 79 year old president referred to himself as “the GOAT” and claimed he “gets much larger aunces than Elvis in his prime, and he does so without a guitar.”

The astic declaration comes as multiple high profile artists have withdrawn from the Great American State Fair, a 16 day festival scheduled to run from June 25 to July 10 on the National Mall in Washington DC. Trump indicated he might deliver a “major speech” and host an “AMERICA IS BACK” rally at the event on Wednesday, adding that “Only Great Patriots invited.” The festival, organized by Freedom 250, a nonprofit created by the Trump administration, has become mired in controversy as performers claim they were misled about its political nature.

Among those backing out are The Commodores, Martina McBride, Young MC, Morris Day, and Bret Michaels. The R&B group The Commodores announced their withdrawal on Instagram Friday, stating that while their music has always been their voice, they choose not to publicly affiliate with any single political party. McBride similarly explained on X that she was “presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading.”

Freedom 250 has maintained its stance as a nonpartisan organization despite the exodus of talent. Spokeswoman Rachel Reisner released a statement emphasizing that “there is far too much to celebrate about this great nation to let noise and division distract from the incredible moment ahead.” She added that the organization looks forward to welcoming millions of Americans to a fair that “belongs to all Americans.” However, the string of cancellations and the president’s combative response have raised questions about whether the event can maintain its claimed neutrality.

Not all performers have abandoned ship. Rappers Flo Rida and Vanilla Ice confirmed they will perform as planned. Vanilla Ice defended his participation in an Instagram video, saying he was tired of news channels dividing the country and insisting the event is “not a political platform” but rather a celebration of America’s birthday. His comments reflect a broader tension in American cultural life, where even ostensibly patriotic celebrations have become flashpoints in the nation’s ongoing political polarization.

As the semiquincentennial approaches, the controversy surrounding the Great American State Fair highlights deeper divisions about who gets to define American patriotism and how the nation should commemorate its founding. Whether Trump actually takes the stage himself remains to be seen, but his characteristically grandiose suggestion has already overshadowed what organizers hoped would be a unifying national celebration. With just weeks until the festival begins, Freedom 250 faces the challenge of either securing replacement talent or accepting a lineup that may reinforce perceptions of partisan affiliation, potentially undermining the milestone anniversary it was meant to honor.
