Media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu has shared details about his past struggle with smoking addiction and how he eventually overcame the habit after years of dependence.
Speaking during a recent episode of the ‘MENtality’ podcast alongside singer Banky W and social media influencer Aproko Doctor, Ebuka revealed that he began smoking while in JSS3 and continued for 13 years.
According to him, the addiction became severe during his university days when he was consuming up to two packs of cigarettes daily.
“I started smoking in JSS3. I smoked for 13 years. By the time I entered university, I was smoking two packs a day. I was a heavy smoker,” he said.
Ebuka explained that he later made conscious and deliberate efforts to quit smoking, eventually overcoming the addiction through discipline and self awareness.
During the discussion, Banky W also opened up about his personal battle with ography addiction. The singer explained that he initially turned to ography as a way to avoid promiscuity, believing it would help him stay away from unhealthy relationships.
“I was trying to battle ography and decided that instead of moving from woman to woman, I should just be watching ography,” he admitted.
Reacting to the discussion, Ebuka noted that many people often replace one harmful habit with another while trying to escape previous addictions.
Aproko Doctor added that many addictions are linked to emotional struggles and the human desire to escape pain while seeking pleasure. According to him, substance abuse and other unhealthy habits are often coping mechanisms for deeper emotional challenges.
The trio stressed the importance of self regulation self discovery and emotional healing as key steps toward overcoming addiction and building healthier lifestyles.
