Former Super Eagles captain Kanu Nwankwo has joined celebrations after Arsenal secured the 2025/26 English Premier League title, ending a 22 year wait for the club’s domestic crown.
Arsenal’s triumph was confirmed on Tuesday night following Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth, a result that made Mikel Arteta’s side unassailable at the top of the table. The Gunners, who led City by two points heading into the penultimate round, now go into the final match of the season four points clear and are set to officially lift the trophy at Crystal Palace.
The victory marks Arsenal’s first league title since the famous 2003/04 Invincibles season, a historic campaign in which Kanu Nwankwo was part of the squad that went unbeaten throughout the league season.
Kanu, who made 10 appearances during that Invincibles season, took to social media platform X to congratulate the club. He described the triumph as well deserved, praising the team’s resilience and determination.
Arsenal, where Kanu played between 1999 and 2004, remains one of the most successful periods of his career. He made 197 appearances for the club, scoring 44 goals and providing 38 assists, while winning multiple trophies including Premier League and FA Cup titles.
After leaving Arsenal, Kanu went on to play for West Bromwich Albion and Portsmouth, bringing his Premier League appearance tally to 273 matches with 54 goals and 29 assists, making him one of the most prominent Nigerian players in English football history.
Beyond club football, Kanu enjoyed an illustrious career at international level, winning the FIFA U17 World Cup in 1993 and Olympic gold in 1996 with Nigeria. He also achieved success in Europe with Ajax and Inter Milan, including a UEFA Champions League title and other continental honours.
Arsenal’s latest title has once again highlighted the club’s history and the legacy of players like Kanu who contributed to its golden era.
