Chelsea FC have officially appointed Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager on a four year contract as the Premier League side continues efforts to revive its fortunes.
The announcement was made on Sunday following Chelsea’s disappointing FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City on Saturday. The Blues currently sit ninth in the Premier League table with only two matches remaining in the season.
Chelsea confirmed that Alonso will officially begin his role on July 1, 2026, after agreeing to a long term deal at Stamford Bridge.
In a statement, the club said it was delighted to appoint the Spaniard as manager of the men’s team, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the club into a new era.
Xabi Alonso earned widespread praise across Europe after guiding Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten German league and cup double during the 2023 2024 season, elishing himself as one of football’s brightest young managers.
However, his spell at Real Madrid was short lived. Alonso was appointed manager of the Spanish giants last year but left the club in January after just seven months in charge.
The former Spanish international now faces a major rebuilding task at Chelsea as supporters hope he can restore the club’s competitiveness both domestically and in Europe.
Chelsea have struggled for consistency in recent seasons despite massive spending in the transfer market. Their FA Cup final loss means the club has now gone eight years without winning a domestic trophy.
