A Nigerian doctor based in Canada Arinze Onwumelu has advised popular singer Portable to undergo a medical brain examination following his recent celebrity boxing match with skit maker Carter Efe.
The bout which took place in Lagos over the weekend ended in defeat for Portable drawing widespread reactions across social media and among fans. The fight quickly became a trending topic with many expressing concern over the intensity of punches exced during the match.
In a video shared online Onwumelu also known as Dr Zo recommended that the singer undergo a Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan to assess any potential internal head injuries. He warned that repeated blows to sensitive areas of the head could result in serious medical conditions including Subdural haematoma which can be life threatening if left untreated.
According to the doctor the nature of the punches delivered during the fight raised concerns about possible damage to blood vessels or brain tissue. He emphasised that exhibition matches are meant for entertainment and should not expose participants to excessive physical harm.
Onwumelu also called on organisers of celebrity boxing events to prioritise safety by making protective headgear mandatory to reduce the risk of severe injuries.
Portable had earlier expressed confidence ahead of the match citing previous victories against entertainers including Speed Darlington and Charles Okocha. However his latest defeat has shifted attention from performance to health concerns with calls for proper medical evaluation.
The incident has reignited discussions about safety standards in entertainment driven sporting events and the need to protect participants from avoidable health risks.
