Kobbie Mainoo has signed a long term contract extension with Manchester United that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2031, ending months of speculation about his future at the club.
The 21 year old midfielder, who joined United’s academy in 2014, has made 98 appearances and scored seven goals, including a memorable strike in the 2024 FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.
Despite his early promise, Mainoo endured a difficult spell under former manager Ruben Amorim, where he struggled for game time and even saw a loan request rejected.
His fortunes ced following Amorim’s departure in January, with Michael Carrick stepping in as head coach. Under Carrick’s leadership, Mainoo has been revitalized, starting nearly every match and playing a crucial role in United’s surge to third place in the Premier League standings, putting them on course for a return to the Champions League.
Speaking after signing the deal, Mainoo described Manchester United as his home and emphasized his deep connection to the club. He expressed determination to help the team compete consistently for major trophies in the coming years, highlighting a growing sense of momentum within the squad.
Club director of football Jason Wilcox praised Mainoo’s talent, professionalism, and character, describing him as one of the most naturally gifted young players in the game and a role model for the club’s academy prospects.
Mainoo’s resurgence has also been recognized internationally, as he has regained his place in the England national football team under manager Thomas Tuchel, featuring in recent friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.
