Liverpool F.C. forward Hugo Ekitike is reportedly set to miss the remainder of the season and the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a severe Achilles tendon rupture during the club’s UEFA Champions League defeat to Paris Saint Germain.

The 23 year old French striker picked up the injury midway through the first half at Anfield after attempting to accelerate, before collapsing to the pitch in visible distress. He was later taken off on a stretcher, with early medical assessments suggesting a recovery period of around nine months.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot described the injury as “very serious,” admitting after the match that the situation “does not look good” and that the club would await further medical evaluation.

Ekitike’s absence is a major setback for both club and country. The £69 million summer signing had been in strong form, scoring 11 Premier League goals in his debut season and contributing a total of 17 goals and six assists across all competitions in 45 appearances.

The injury is expected to rule him out of France’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, dealing a significant blow to their ing options ahead of the tournament.

Medical reports indicate that an Achilles tendon rupture typically requires extensive rehabilitation, often sidelining athletes for most of a season depending on recovery progress.

Liverpool are now expected to reassess their ing depth as they continue their campaign without one of their key forwards.
