Dr John Afolayan Leads 100km Sahara Trek to Support UK Orthopaedic Hospital

UK based Nigerian Consultant Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeon John O Afolayan has embarked on a remarkable five day 100 kilometre trek across the Sahara Desert to raise funds for the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore Greater London.

Dr Afolayan is joined by colleagues Roozbeh Shafafy and Hanny Anwar as well as Anwar’s son Farouk Anwar in the demanding expedition which began on March 18 2026. The team is navigating the challenging terrain of Morocco including vast sand dunes and steep mountain passes in a test of endurance and resilience.

The trek is aimed at supporting the charitable initiatives of RNOH a leading specialist hospital within the National Health Service. The hospital provides advanced orthopaedic care to patients across the United Kingdom treating complex conditions affecting bones joints muscles and the spine including spinal disorders bone cancer and severe injuries.

Although core services at the hospital are funded by the NHS charitable donations play a crucial role in enabling investments in cutting edge technology groundbreaking research and improved patient care facilities. The funds raised from this साहारा trek are expected to further strengthen the hospital’s ability to deliver world class treatment.

Speaking on the initiative Dr Afolayan emphasized the importance of giving back and supporting healthcare advancement. He noted that the trek is not only a personal challenge but also a mission to ensure patients continue to receive the highest standards of care.

The effort highlights the growing role of medical professionals in championing charitable causes while inspiring others to contribute to impactful healthcare initiatives.
