Fresh cracks have emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party after leaders met in Abuja on Tuesday to discuss the implications of a Court of Appeal ruling that nullified the party’s 2025 national convention.
The Court of Appeal upheld the cancellation of the PDP convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025, forcing the party into urgent talks about its future. However, the ruling appears to have deepened internal divisions, with a rival faction rejecting the Abuja meeting and announcing its own Board of Trustees meeting for Wednesday.
At the expanded BoT meeting in Abuja, factional BoT Chairman Adolphus Wabara, factional National Chairman Tanimu Turaki, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, speaking for PDP governors, addressed party leaders on the court decision and the way forward. Wabara emphasized the need to respect the law and see the ruling as an opportunity to rebuild the party, while reflecting on the legacy of the late former Vice President Alex Ekwueme.
Turaki highlighted that the party’s current challenges raised concerns beyond PDP members, urging leaders to consider practical solutions that would protect both the party and Nigeria’s democracy. Makinde described the moment as challenging but expressed hope that it would pass, quoting scripture: “Weeping may endure for the night, but in the morning, joy co.”
Despite the meeting, divisions were evident as the Wike loyalist faction issued a separate BoT meeting notice for Wednesday at LifeCamp, Abuja. The faction reaffirmed its recognition under the Abdulrahman Anyanwu-led National Caretaker Working Committee and warned non-accredited members to stay away.
As the party navigates these turbulent times, all eyes are on how the PDP will reconcile its factions and respond to the court ruling, with the outcome likely to have lasting implications for the party and Nigeria’s political landscape.
