The Lagos State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its directive halting all construction on the demolished sites in Makoko and Shogunle communities, pending the conclusion of reconciliation efforts expected within two weeks.

During a committee meeting with community leaders, the Assembly adopted the recommendation of the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on E-GIS, Dr. Olajide Babatunde, elishing a 250-metre setback from the Third Mainland Bridge and an additional 250-metre buffer beyond the power line corridor. The measure effectively prohibits all forms of development within the designated areas.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, represented by Majority Leader Hon. Noheem Adams, stressed that the Assembly, in collaboration with the Lagos State Building Control Agency and the E-GIS Office, has directed each affected community to constitute a 10-member committee.

Adams urged stakeholders to unite in addressing the needs of residents, noting that committees must include women, youths, students, and traditional community leaders to secure lasting solutions. He also confirmed that the State Executive Council is finalising compensation arrangements for affected residents while dialogue continues.

Reacting after the meeting, the Executive Chairman of Yaba Local Government expressed satisfaction with the resolutions reached, highlighting that relief materials and palliatives had already been distributed by both the state and local governments.

He also praised the Assembly committee’s plan to conclude its assignment within the two-week timeframe, urging residents to comply strictly with the directives and warning community leaders against pursuing personal interests that could undermine peace and the resolution process.

The move underscores Lagos State’s commitment to structured urban planning, resident safety, and peaceful resolution of disputes in waterfront communities.
