North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party has promoted leader Kim Jong Un’s younger sister Kim Yo Jong to a top role within the party’s central committee, state media reported Tuesday, highlighting her growing influence in the reclusive nation. The elevation comes during the party’s once in five years congress in Pyongyang, attended by thousands of elites shaping the country’s domestic and foreign policies.

The Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim Yo Jong was appointed department director within the party’s apex central committee. While her specific portfolio was not disclosed, she previously held senior responsibilities in the party’s propaganda unit. Analysts note that her promotion is equivalent to a ministerial rank, further cementing her as one of the most powerful figures in North Korea.

Kim Yo Jong has played prominent roles in diplomacy, nuclear negotiations, and high level state affairs. She was a key figure during Kim Jong Un’s summits with former US President Donald Trump in Singapore and Hanoi, and represented North Korea at the 2018 Pyeongc Winter Olympics, becoming one of the first members of the Kim dynasty to visit South Korea since the Korean War.

Observers say the promotion underscores her trusted status within the regime. Ahn Chan il, a North Korea researcher, noted, “Kim Yo Jong is one of the very few people Kim Jong Un can trust and rely on. She is experienced and seasoned.” Her public rhetoric has ranged from aggressive denunciations of Washington and Seoul to a more measured tone under South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.

The congress also fuels speculation about the future succession of the Kim dynasty, with leader Kim Jong Un’s teenage daughter Kim Ju Ae emerging as a potential heir. Analysts will closely watch whether the event elevates her status alongside Kim Yo Jong.

The congress provides a rare insight into North Korea’s opaque political processes and is widely interpreted as a demonstration of Kim Jong Un’s consolidated control over the party and state machinery.
