In a rare admission, Ghanaian academic Prof. Noel Tagoe, Dean of Nile Business School (NBS), publicly expressed admiration and a tinge of envy for Nigeria after visiting the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals FZE (DPRP), Africa’s largest refinery, located on over 6,000 acres in Lagos. The visit, part of NBS’s Executive MBA programme, aimed to give students hands-on exposure to Nigeria’s industrial landscape.
Prof. Tagoe described the facility as “world-class” and praised Alhaji Aliko Dangote for identifying a critical gap in Nigeria’s oil sector and building a solution that positions the country and continent in the global oil market. He noted that the tour provided insights for developing Africa-focused case stus, bridging the gap between theory and real-world business challenges.
During the visit, Dangote highlighted the talent of Nigerian engineers, many of whom had no foreign experience, yet performed on par with international counterparts. He emphasized the importance of identifying value gaps in Africa and encouraged students to develop solutions that leverage local potential.
The experience reinforced NBS’s approach to business education: a practice-first model grounded in African realities, preparing graduates to become innovative problem-solvers capable of addressing Nigeria and Africa’s unique challenges. Prof. Tagoe concluded with a humorous nod to Ghanaian pride, remarking, “At least Ghana is going to the World Cup.”
