Vice-President Kashim Shettima on Thursday departed Abuja for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 2026 African Union (AU) Summit. The summit, themed “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” aims to advance continental commitments on sustainable water management, improved sanitation systems, and the broader development aspirations outlined in AU’s Agenda 2063 framework.
During his visit, Shettima will join fellow African leaders at the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of AU Heads of State and Government. He will also participate in the 30th General Assembly, scheduled for February 14 and 15, 2026.
In addition to plenary sessions, the vice-president is expected to take part in high-level side events and bilateral engagements with political and business leaders. These meetings are intended to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic, economic, and strategic partnerships across the continent.
Shettima is accompanied by cabinet ministers and other senior government officials, underscoring the federal government’s commitment to active participation in AU initiatives. His presence is seen as a demonstration of Nigeria’s leadership role in addressing continental challenges, particularly in water and sanitation management, which are critical for sustainable development in Africa.
The vice-president is expected to return to Nigeria after completing his official engagements in Addis Ababa, bringing back insights and strategies to advance Nigeria’s domestic and regional development priorities.
