Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters is investigating an alleged coup plot following the detention of at least 16 military officers across the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Security sources describe the move as part of an internal security operation, while officials urge calm and warn against spreading rumours.

According to multiple media reports, those detained include Brigar General Musa Abubakar Sadiq, Colonel M.A. Ma’aji, Lt Colonels S. Bappah, A.A. Hayatu, P. Dangnap, and M. Almakura; Majors A.J. Ibrahim, M.M. Jiddah, M.A. Usman, D. Yusuf, and I. Dauda; Captains Ibrahim Bello and A.A. Yusuf; Lieutenant S.S. Felix; Lieutenant Commander D.B. Abdullahi (Navy); and Squadron Leader S.B. Adamu (Air Force). The reports remain unverified, and no formal charges have been publicly confirmed.

While several of the officers are said to hail from northern Nigeria, analysts caution against interpreting the investigation through an ethnic lens. Authorities emphasise that every suspect is entitled to due process.

The government has recently reshuffled senior defence posts and increased intelligence monitoring nationwide. Observers say transparency and restraint will be vital to maintaining public trust and preventing unnecessary political or regional tension as the inquiry continues.
